Tracking activity using Outbound Attribution and UTM parameters
Outbound Attribution allows you to automatically add UTM parameters to all webpage links in your Flow action buttons. This helps you track visitor activity in tools like Google Analytics, HubSpot, Microsoft Clarity, and other marketing platforms.
When enabled, ReelFlow will append UTM parameters to button links, making it easy to see which Flows and buttons are driving traffic to other pages of your website or external website destinations where you have tracking visibility.
How Outbound Attribution with UTM parameters works
When Outbound Attribution is enabled, ReelFlow automatically adds four UTM parameters to button navigation URLs:
- utm_source — Always set to
reelflow - utm_medium — Defaults to
interactive_video(customizable) - utm_campaign — Automatically set based on your Flow name
- utm_content — Automatically set based on the button label
What does and doesn’t get tracked with Outbound Attribution and UTM parameters
Tracked: UTM parameters are only added to buttons that navigate to another page or URL.
Not Tracked: UTM parameters are not added to buttons that…
- Play another video reel
- Scroll the page or navigate by anchor alone, e.g.
#link - Close the player
How the UTM parameters are prepared
Flow names and button labels are automatically converted into URL-safe values, removing emojis and converting whitespace. Examples:
- Flow name: "Product Demo 🎥" →
utm_campaign=product-demo - Button label: "Get Started!" →
utm_content=get-started
UTM Parameter changes take effect immediately
When you enable Outbound Attribution or update the UTM Medium value, changes apply instantly to all Flows - no need to republish.
Viewing attribution data in Google Analytics and other third-party analytics services
Once enabled, UTM parameters will appear in your analytics tools automatically. Look for traffic sources attributed to:
- Source: reelflow
- Medium: interactive_video (or your custom value)
- Campaign: your-flow-name
- Content: your-button-label
This data helps you understand which Flows and buttons are driving the most engagement and conversions.
Enabling Outbound Attribution & UTM parameters
- Go to Workspace Settings
- Scroll to the Outbound Attribution (UTMs) section
- Toggle Add UTM parameters to outbound button links to On
- Optionally customize the UTM Medium field
- Changes apply immediately to all Flows in your workspace
Note: You can manually set UTM parameters on button URLs, and these will override any settings in your Outbound Attribution preferences in Workspace Settings.
What happens to existing UTM and URL parameters I added on individual buttons?
ReelFlow preserves any existing query parameters in your button URLs and appends UTM parameters alongside them.
If a URL already contains UTM parameters and Outbound Attribution is enabled, those existing URL parameters will override any Workspace-configured values.
