Reviewing and editing video captions
This article explains how ReelFlow’s captioning system works, including automatic caption generation, mandatory caption review, using our Caption Editor, managing time-based caption units, and leveraging the dictionary feature.
Captioning
Captions are a critical part of the ReelFlow Player experience, ensuring accessibility, SEO optimization, and viewer convenience.
ReelFlow automatically generates captions for all videos in the Library, and provides editing and dictionary correction features. This guide covers how to generate, review and edit captions, and publish Flows with the confidence.
Automatic Caption Generation
How Caption Generation Works
- Captions are automatically generated when you upload a video to the Library.
- Captions are created in the Workspace’s default language, which can be set in the Workspace Settings. Currently ReelFlow supports generating captions in English.
- Automated text substitutions based on a pre-defined workspace-level Dictionary (e.g., names, company terms) are highlighted for easy review.
- A Flow cannot be published until all captions in that Flow have been reviewed by you. If a video reel in Flow hasn’t been reviewed for accuracy in the Caption Editor, the pre-flight check will stop publishing and warn you that it needs to be reviewed first.
Using the Caption Editor
You can open the Caption Editor from these two locations in the Dashboard:
- the Library
- in the Flow Builder while editing, in Step Settings
Using the editor:
- The captions are divided-up into time-based “units”, and this represents how they are shown during playback for visitors viewing a Flow on the website.
- Each unit represents a fixed period of time, so we will show a red line around a unit if a change to the caption text might make it too long or too short for the time allocated.
- You can revert any changes you’ve made to a caption by right clicking on the unit and selecting the revert to original text option from the menu.
Using the Dictionary & generating captions
-
The Workspace Dictionary is used in caption generation, and provides a way to preserve custom jargon, terms and brand names you commonly use in videos.
-
Items in the Dictionary will influence future caption generation attempts, ideal for saving brand names or uncommon terms that you may otherwise need to spell out
Note: changes to the Dictionary will not affect or update videos which have already had their captions generated.
-
Words and phrases already in your Workspace Dictionary will be underlined for you in the Caption Editor
-
In the Caption Editor, right-click on an underlined word to:
- Revert to the original word if a change has been made
- Remove a word from the dictionary to avoid it being used in future transcriptions.
- Adding a new word or phrase substitution to the dictionary
