Set the Player sound preferences
This article explains how to change whether ReelFlow audio is muted or unmuted by default when a visitor visits your website.
How the Player Sound Preference applies
The Player Sound Preference lets you choose if the videos in Flows across your website will play with sound on, or muted when a visitor first arrives.
Setting the Player Sound Preference to Sound On does not guarantee the sound will play for all visitors, some browsers and devices will always ignore your preference. The visitor’s own settings, browser and device will dictate this behaviour, for example sound will not play if their phone is in silent mode, or if they are using a browser in incognito/privacy mode.
When a visitor changes the sound on a video (like muting or unmuting), that preference is remembered for all videos of the same type on the site. For example, if they mute one Overlay Player, all Overlay Players will stay muted as they move around the website - until they turn the sound back on or close the tab.
Reasons to mute the Player Sound Preference by default
It can be a poor experience for a user if audio starts playing on a website without asking; we don’t know where the visitor is, or what environment they are in when they first encounter a Flow.
We generate accessible captions for the videos you use in ReelFlow, which always gives visitors a viable way to experience the video with or without audio. Adding captions is also good for a website’s SEO and AEO performance, and this is a secondary benefit to adding Flows to a website.
