Configure your ReelFlow Player Sound Preferences
This article explains how to configure your player sound preferences.
Player Sound Preference
The Player Sound Preference for Inline Players and Overlay Players lets you choose if the videos will play your Flows with sound on, or muted.
Note: Setting the Player Sound Preference to Sound On does not guarantee the sound will play for all visitors, some browsers and devices will always ignore your preference. The visitor’s own settings, browser and device will dictate this behaviour, for example sound will not play if their phone is in silent mode, or if they are using a browser in incognito/privacy mode.
You can set a default sound option in ↗️ Settings > Workspace > Player Sound Preference.
When a visitor changes the sound on a video (like muting or unmuting), that preference is remembered for all videos of the same type on the site. For example, if they mute one Overlay Player, all Overlay Players will stay muted as they move around the website - until they turn the sound back on or close the tab.
Why we mute Player audio as standard
It can be a poor experience for a user if audio starts playing on a website without asking; we don’t know where the visitor is or what company they are in. We initially mute all audio on ReelFlow Players on first load.
We generate accessible captions for all videos in ReelFlow, allowing visitors to opt-in to listening to the audio, or quietly dismiss the video option if they prefer. Adding captions is good for the site’s SEO and AEO performance, and this is a secondary benefit to adding Flows to a website.
All ReelFlow Players of the same type on a website share a common mute setting. If the visitor alters the Player mute setting – they turn audio on or off – their preference will be used for that website across all Players of the same type (Player types: Overlay or Inline), overriding the default Player behaviour. The visitor preference will remain active until the website tab is closed.
If you prefer audio to play as soon as the website visitor interacts with the Player, you can change the default behaviour in ↗️ **Settings > Workspace > Player Sound Preference.**
Note: Setting the Player Sound Preference to Sound On does not guarantee the sound will play. For details of these exceptions, see Player Sound Preference.
